Thursday afternoon we headed for
Prisse. Margery could get euros while also seeing a different area.
I've already had pictures of these places on this blog so I didn't
expect to be using my camera very often.
An exception popped up at
the roundabout down the road from the Prisse supermarket. It features
the Rock of Solutre because the real one is nearby.
Pierreclos wasn't far so we took a
short side trip to see that chateau. On the way I spotted one lavoir
I hadn't seen before and Margery spotted this one for me. It's on the main street through town.
We then went to Berze la Ville to see
the Monk's Chapel with its original fresco.
I managed to weave my way
through some narrow streets, using the white cross on the hill as a
guide to find the gypsum foundry.
I was really proud of myself when I
then found the unmarked back road that headed us home. Jacques was
out for a walk so I stopped the car long enough to say hello and
exchange a few pleasantries.
Further along I stopped so Margery could
get pictures of Berze le Chatel.
We made it home in time for the Blanot
weekly market. Since it had rained earlier Mathilde set up her
produce in a small room around the corner from Mark and Susan's goat
cheese shop.
Looking Across the Saone River From Macon |
In France this day is known as the
Festival of Music, or Fete de la Musique. Elisabeth was taking us to
meet a friend in Macon where many groups would be performing.
Marcienne had made sandwiches and we stopped at a park by the Saone
to enjoy our meal.
I thought it was pretty cool to have concrete
“stuffed” chairs at the base of Lamartine's statue.
We were too
late for one group that had been playing here so we moved on to find
others.
Neither Elisabeth nor Margery would dance with Marcienne, so I finally did. One dance was enough. I got so dizzy she had to hold me up.
The gal with the accordion later played the bagpipes. Anne calls the wooden instruments that get cranked hurdy- gurdies.
There were free concerts all over the city.
We heard the orchestra at the music school (not pictured) play "Moon River", "Porgy and Bess", "Lullaby of Broadway", and "It don't Mean a Thing".
There really are people on stage, though the lights have obliterated them. |
